Consolidation

Server consolidation is rapidly becoming recognized as one of the best ways for businesses to increase IT efficiency while reducing overall costs. System p servers include both the leadership performance and the proven virtualization capabilities to enable a successful consolidation of your applications on the AIX 5L and Linux operating systems.  PowerVM capabilities allow the consolidation of systems onto single POWER6 servers.  IBM’s BladeCenter range allows the consolidation of smaller applications into a smaller footprint freeing up vital Datacenter resources.

Scale vertically

To scale vertically (or scale up) is to add resources to a single node in a system, typically involving the addition of CPUs or memory to a single computer. Such vertical scaling of existing systems also enables them to leverage virtualisation technology more effectively, as it provides more resources for the hosted set of operating system and application modules to share.  IBM Power Systems platform uses PowerVM to consolidate existing systems into fewer POWER6 systems using PowerVM virtualization.

Scale horizontally

To scale horizontally (or scale out) means to add more nodes to a system, such as adding a new computer to a distributed software application. An example might be scaling out from one web server system to three. IBM Power Systems platform uses Power Blade offerings to consolidate existing systems into a smaller footprint using the BladeCenter technologies.
